Moving questions, answered
Here are straight answers to the questions Austin customers ask us most. The short version: every move gets a free, no-obligation quote, furniture disassembly is included, and the clock starts when the first item is moved.
Pricing and billing
How much do movers cost in Austin?
It depends on your move. Most movers bill by the hour based on crew size, with a minimum. Home size, stairs, distance, packing, specialty items and your date all change the total. Every move is different, which is why we give a free, no-obligation quote.
Is there a minimum charge?
Yes. Every move has a 2-hour minimum. After that, we bill in 15-minute increments for the actual time worked.
When does the clock start and stop?
The clock starts when the first item is moved, not when the truck leaves our shop. It stops when the truck is empty at your new place. The drive between your old and new home is part of the move time.
Is there a travel charge?
Travel is handled differently by every mover, so always ask. Many start the clock when the truck leaves their shop. Ours starts when the first item is moved, and any travel cost is shown on your quote up front.
Is my quote a fixed price?
No. Local quotes are non-binding. You pay for the actual time your move takes, at the rate on your quote. Being packed and ready when the crew arrives is the easiest way to keep the bill down.
How many movers will I need?
We never send just 1 mover. Studios to 2-bedroom apartments usually need 2 movers, bigger apartments and houses usually need 3, and big homes need 4 movers and a second truck. Your quote recommends the right crew so you're not paying for a long, slow day.
What's included in my move?
The crew, a box truck, dollies, moving blankets and tools, wrapping and padding your furniture, and taking apart and putting back together standard furniture. Packing labor, packing materials we use and upgraded protection are extra.
What protection do I get if something is damaged?
Every move includes basic released value protection at no cost: 60 cents per pound, per item, which is the Texas minimum. You can choose more protection when you book. If you have fragile, expensive or sentimental items, ask us about the upgrade. If something is ever damaged, see how damage claims work: there is no deadline, and we usually close claims within 1–3 days.
Booking
How do I book a move?
Get your free quote online or by phone at (512) 676-5375. We confirm the details with you, then you sign your estimate, choose a protection plan and pay a deposit to hold your date.
Is the deposit refundable?
No. The deposit for local moves is non-refundable, and the full amount comes off your final bill.
How far in advance should I book movers?
2–3 weeks out is ideal. The earlier the better, especially in summer and at the end of the month. Read how far in advance to book movers in Austin.
Can you do a last-minute or same-day move?
Sometimes. Call us at (512) 676-5375. Same-day requests are checked with a manager, and we'll tell you honestly whether we can make it work.
When can I reach you?
Our phones are answered 9am–6pm, 7 days a week, at (512) 676-5375.
Moving day
How many movers do I need?
2 movers for up to a 2-bedroom apartment, 3 movers for 3-bedroom apartments and most houses, and 4 movers with a second truck for 4+ bedroom homes. If 2 movers would need 7+ hours, we'll suggest adding a 3rd so the day goes faster. We never send just 1 mover.
Do you take apart and put back together furniture?
Yes. Beds, desks, couches, cabinets and shelves are included in your moving time. If something is too complex for a moving crew, we'll tell you before moving day so you can line up a handyman.
Will you mount my TV or hang my art?
We take down TVs and art and move them safely, but we don't remount them.
What won't you move?
Flammable or combustible items like propane, firearms and other weapons, and gas appliances that are still connected. Please disconnect gas lines before we arrive.
Do I need to disconnect my appliances?
Gas appliances must be disconnected before the crew arrives. We can handle water lines.
How can I make my move faster and cheaper?
Be fully packed with boxes taped and closed, reserve elevators and loading docks, make sure the truck can park close to your door, and move Monday to Thursday if you can. Our Austin moving checklist walks through it week by week.
Do you offer loading or unloading only?
Yes. If you have your own rental truck, POD or container, our crew can load or unload it for you. It's quoted like a regular move. Our crew loads it tight and helps secure the load. You provide the straps or tie-downs and a lock, and you drive it. Once it leaves, it's your responsibility, and your sales rep goes over this when you get your quote.
Packing
How much does packing cost?
Packing is quoted separately, based on how much you want packed. We send at least 2 packers. A kitchen usually takes 2–4 hours, and most other rooms take 30–90 minutes. See packing services.
Do I pay for boxes and packing supplies?
Only for what we actually use. Moving blankets are included with every move.
When does packing happen?
For homes bigger than a 2-bedroom apartment, we usually pack the day before the move. If we pack on moving day, we pack first and then move, and each part is billed at its own rate.
Is there anything you won't pack?
We don't pack open liquids, matches or other flammables, firearms, or anything illegal.
Pianos, safes and heavy items
Do you move pianos?
Yes: upright, spinet and baby grand pianos,, with a custom quote reviewed by a manager. See piano moving.
Do you move gun safes?
Yes, with a custom quote reviewed by a manager. The safe must be completely emptied before moving day, including all firearms, because we don't move firearms. See safe moving.
How do you price items over 300 pounds?
Every piano, safe and item over 300 pounds gets a custom quote. We ask for photos, the make and model, the weight, stairs or elevators at both ends, and doorway widths. A manager reviews it before we give you a price.
Do you move art and antiques?
Yes. We pad and wrap them with care, and we'll take art down from the wall (we don't rehang it). For valuable pieces, ask about upgraded protection when you book. See specialty item moving.
Long distance
Do you do long-distance moves?
Yes. We move from Austin to anywhere in Texas and out of state. See long distance moving.
How is a long-distance move priced?
Every long-distance move gets a custom quote built by a manager, based on distance, drive time and your inventory. Long-distance moves are booked a little differently from local moves, and we'll walk you through it.
