That's the short version. Round Rock is one of the most popular places to land in the Austin area, and for good reason: newer neighborhoods, a little more room, and a commute that doesn't always mean crossing all of Austin. Our crews make the drive up I-35 all the time, so here's what we've learned about making a Round Rock move go smoothly.
Round Rock at a glance
If you're new to the area, here's the quick lay of the land:
- Where it is: right on I-35 in Williamson County, about 20 miles north of downtown Austin.
- Main roads: I-35 runs straight through the middle. The SH-45 toll road runs along the south side, 183A is off to the west, and SH-130 is off to the east.
- Homes: a mix of older neighborhoods near downtown, big master-planned communities like Teravista and Forest Creek (most with an HOA), and plenty of apartments.
- Local landmarks: Dell's headquarters, the Dell Diamond (home of the Round Rock Express), a historic downtown, and Round Rock Donuts. Bringing donuts for the crew is not required. It is noticed.
Plan your move around I-35
I-35 is the main road between Austin and Round Rock, and it backs up at rush hour. That matters on moving day, because the drive between your old place and your new one is part of your moving time.
- Pick your start time on purpose. A mid-morning start often misses the worst of the morning rush and still gets you unloaded well before dinner.
- Think about the toll roads. SH-45, 183A and SH-130 can save a lot of time on the right route. Know which way you'd drive before moving day.
- Skip Friday afternoon if you can. A weekday morning move is usually the calmest drive of the week.
HOAs, gates and new construction
This is where Round Rock moves get tripped up most often. Not the heavy stuff. The paperwork.
- Check your HOA rules. Many Round Rock neighborhoods have rules on moving trucks, street parking and move times. A full-size box truck needs room to park close to the door, so ask before moving day, not on it.
- Sort out gate access. If your community is gated, tell us how the crew gets in. A truck idling at a locked gate is nobody's favorite start to the day.
- Confirm your closing date first. A lot of Round Rock homes are new builds. Builders' dates can slide, so confirm closing before you lock in a moving date.
- Send a map pin for a brand-new street. If your street is so new it isn't on maps yet, a dropped pin saves the crew a few laps around the neighborhood.
- Apartments need a COI. Most Round Rock apartment communities ask the moving company for a certificate of insurance. Send us the building's requirements and we can turn it around quickly.
When to book your Round Rock movers
For most moves, booking 2 to 3 weeks out is ideal. Earlier is better if you're moving at the end of the month, on a weekend, or in the summer, because those dates fill first.
Moving in November or December? Keep the holidays in mind. The days right around Thanksgiving and the end of the year book up, because a lot of people try to move while they're off work. If your date is flexible, a mid-week, mid-month move is the easiest one to get.
Moving sooner than 2 weeks from now? Call anyway. Weekday openings do come up. You can also get an instant quote online in a few minutes and see your options.
Packing for a Round Rock move
The fastest moves are the ones where everything is packed and ready when the crew walks in. A few tips:
- Pack by room and label the room on the box. "Kitchen" or "Primary bedroom" tells the crew exactly where each box goes at the new house.
- Start with the rooms you use least. Guest rooms, the garage and closets first. Kitchen last.
- Pack a first-night box. Sheets, towels, phone chargers, medications, toiletries, a few dishes and the coffee maker. Keep it in your car, not on the truck.
- Get help with the hard part. If the kitchen alone is making you nervous, our packing services can handle just the kitchen and fragile items, or the whole house.
Moving between Austin and Round Rock
Moving from Austin up to Round Rock, or from Round Rock down to Austin, is one move with one crew. We load at one end, drive the truck, and unload at the other. No handoffs and no second company.
Here's what you get on every move with us:
- Trained, background-checked movers. Always at least 2, never 1.
- A truck, blankets and tools included. Your furniture gets padded and wrapped before it goes on the truck.
- Furniture taken apart and put back together. Beds, tables and desks are set up at the new place, so you're not sleeping on a mattress on the floor.
- The clock starts when the first item is moved. Not when the crew leaves the shop.
- A free, no-obligation quote. We walk you through it line by line so there are no surprises.
That's how we've earned 330+ five-star Google reviews. You can read more about our Round Rock movers and what a move there looks like.
